With the harsh reality of a declining economy amongst us many companies are trying to expand their enterprise but can not necessarily afford to purchase an entire software system they are not even sure will work for their company Software as a Service, also known as SaaS, may be the exact solution they are looking for.
Using SaaS can reduce the large up-front expense associated with software purchases, by offering less costly monthly pricing and reducing the investment on server hardware. The option of using SaaS allows a system to be hosted as a service provided to the customer by means of the Internet. This eliminates the responsibility of installing and running the application on the company’s computer and alleviates software maintenance, ongoing operation and support.
Although the start up price may be attractive to some manufactures they may view SaaS as having some flaws also. One includes the software vendor having the ability to control and limit usage in addition to forbidding copies and distribution. The software can be utilized by multiple manufactures, therefore virtually eliminating the ability to tailor the system to your needs. While the software will still have the capability of performing tasks required by the individual companies, there is the possibility it may not be possible to incorporate any specifics from your company.
For this reason some companies start out using SaaS and once the funds are available they will purchase the system so they can have it customized to their specific needs. An additional benefit of SaaS allows a company to sample the software with out purchasing an entire system to see how it will work with their operating systems.
